Work on California National Forests starting May 2008
East-West Forestry Associates is a professional forestry services company. One of our main activities is to provide the US Forest Service with highest quality ground-based data for their Forest Inventory and Analysis program.
This year East-West Forestry Associates is looking for qualified forestry technicians, crew members and crew leaders, to conduct "FIA" forest inventories in California-- in Sierra Nevada national forests and in the mountains of Southern California (Angeles, San Bernardino National Forests). During 2008 East-West inventory crews will also be doing Common Stand Exam surveys and endangered species habitat surveys. The work requires camping, wilderness hiking, and working independently outdoors as a member of a small team under variable weather conditions in remote locations. A general knowledge of California flora is very valuable and plant identification skills, using a key, are necessary. We also use GPS and Field Data Recorders (hand held computers and laptops) and so computer skills, including GIS, are also helpful. As precise location of every plot is essential, it is vital that each crew person be comfortable with field use of stereo aerial photography for navigation and plot location purposes. As the job requires travel to remote locations a car is usually necessary for each crew of two persons. A minimum of two years of college level experience is required. A degree in forestry, biology, botany or a related natural resource field is preferred. Previous FIA experience is highly desirable. The project is starting mid-May 2008 and continuing until October. Each crew person will be required to pass a US Forest Service certification examination after 6 weeks of work. We anticipate a winter break and then possibly continuing on a new project in 2009.
The work requires camping, hiking and spending long periods of time in wild places... Please read on.
Pay is $14 -18 per hour, depending on past experience. Also mileage, $33/day per diem, and other expenses are reimbursed. East-West Forestry is expanding and so growth opportunities exist for self-starting candidates with leadership, outdoor and GIS/remote sensing skills.
Candidates may apply by sending (preferably by email) anapplication letter and email resume to Tom Gaman, President, East-West ForestryAssociates, Inc. tgaman@forestdata.com. Application deadline May 15, 2008. Please describe your field experience, outdoor experience, academic background, address, availability and provide references. East-West Forestry Associates, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer. FIA experience preferred.
